What I do at Grasshopper:

I make sure everyone is on board with the Grasshopper mission.  And generally keep all the plates spinning.

Why I do what I do:

After having my daughter, I realised that I wanted to have more say over the work I was doing. I loved communications, but wanted to focus on delivering projects that make a positive difference. So decided to set up Grasshopper.

What is my favourite thing about Grasshopper?

Our amazing and talented team members – ultimately we’re only as good as our people.

Something you don’t know about me:

I play touch rugby for Wales.

Hannah Dineen

What I do at Grasshopper:

I head up our Welsh team, helping to build trust with local communities and ensuring they get to have their say on changes to where they work and live. 

Why I do what I do:

I’m a chartered town planner and love helping developers through the complex development process. I’m also an advocate of communicating simply and jargon-free. 

What is your favourite thing at Grasshopper?

We have a friendly, flexible, nurturing work environment and deliver inclusive campaigns.  

Proudest moment:

In 2024, I completed the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge – climbing Pen y Fan, Cadair Idris and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in a single day.

Beth Cole

Director, Finance

What I do at Grasshopper:

I head up everything finance.

Why do I do what I do:

I see finance within an organisation as a dual role – fulfilling all the standard finance functions and adding real value.  I love being efficient and helping to shape and support an organisation.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

The people, working with such a great team really makes a difference.

Something you don’t know about me:

I am Welsh Cycling’s volunteer of the year – I’ve clocked up quite a few hours helping out at my local cycling club.

Why I do what I do:

I enjoy researching, and helping others rummage around themes and ideas, especially related to place, people and environment.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I use my built environment expertise, and private and public sector experience to hone ideas and deliver accessible, compact copywriting and editing.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

Their approachability, creativity, and investment in improving communications.

Sporting achievement:

I was once a National and European Sailing Champion for the Spitfire catamaran class.

Why I do what I do: 

I enjoy achieving change through influencing political debate and decision making.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I ensure people and organisations are heard by governments, politicians, and decision makers. Through bespoke advice and planning, I help people understand and navigate Welsh politics.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

Working with a dynamic, forward-thinking team at the cutting edge of communications.

Random fact about you:

I have commentated on a Wales v New Zealand rugby match at the Principality Stadium for a local radio station in South Wales.

Dr Andy Cotter-Roberts

Why I do what I do:

I have a passion for learning more about the world, people and communities around us.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I lead the Research and Insights team, helping clients understand key issues and make the most of the data and information available to them to assess impact and provide solutions.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

I love working as part of a multi-skilled team with an energy and drive for innovating and improving.

Random fact about you:

When I played rugby in China, I was a try scorer in the Sichuan Derby for Chongqing Conquerors against the Chengdu Pandas!

What I do at Grasshopper:

I can put my hand to most things – from crafting press releases, to running social media accounts, facilitating stakeholder consultations or liaising with politicians.  

Why I do what I do:

The UK is in the midst of a climate emergency, and our work with clients helps to address this.

What is your favourite thing at Grasshopper?

Grasshopper is a brilliantly conscientious business with a family feel that cares about wellbeing, allowing us to produce work to our best ability.

Proudest moment:

I won my most prized item, a blue electric guitar, at a battle of the bands when I was seventeen.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I use my Welsh language skills to deliver bilingual community events. I’m able to draw on my career in broadcasting to broaden the options available to our clients.

Why I do what I do:

I get a kick out of combining my passion for Welsh with our goal of delivering excellence in engagement. Plus, I just love speaking Welsh to people and getting paid to do it!

What is your favourite thing at Grasshopper?

I like that Grasshopper is made up of an empathetic bunch of people who see the funny side of life and put each other’s wellbeing first. 

Most embarrassing moment:

I once had to leave my engineer husband with a cameraman, a microphone and a list of questions to interview All Black legend Zinzan Brooke while I legged it to do a satellite feed.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I use my extensive experience in project management to work with clients across a range of consultation programmes.

Why I do what I do:

I get great satisfaction in helping people, and I am passionate about the Welsh language.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

The range of different projects you get to work on, and the people are helpful, supportive and just lovely!

Random fact about you:

I am a qualified personal trainer and represented Wales and Great Britain in athletics (back in the day).

Max McKeown

Political Monitoring Manager

What do I do at Grasshopper:

I lead our political monitoring service, helping to keep clients up to date on the developing policy landscape and the wider political context in Wales and beyond, ensuring they have all the tools to deliver effective campaigns and projects.

Why I do what I do:

I believe informed engagement with politics leads to better decisions, and I want to make politics accessible to ensure those who want to make a positive impact are in the best position to do so.

My favourite thing about Grasshopper:

I really enjoy being part of a team passionate about delivering real value and positive change in Wales, and it helps that everyone’s pretty nice too.

A random fact about me:

I got a tattoo of the big floodlight at Swansea’s St Helen’s ground because apparently its the tallest in Europe. When it turned out this might not be true I kept bugging Swansea Council and Swansea RFC until the BBC eventually did an investigation to find out the truth for me. Still no solid answers. Fuming.

Why I do what I do:

Being a creative person with a passion for the digital arts, I thrive on using my skills to bring design concepts to life.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I design and create; from websites to resident newsletters and everything in between. 

What is your favourite thing at Grasshopper?

There’s a fantastic culture of creativity. We’re a team of communication experts, committed to delivering social and environmental impact.

Embarrassing hobbies:

I still collect Pokemon cards, even though I am a grown-up!

I manage our clients’ community and stakeholder engagement activities, and occasionally support PR and Campaigns work.

Why I do what I do:

I am passionate about helping communities to be heard to create environments that make them happy and safe.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

That we’re playing a significant part in shaping a better Wales of tomorrow.

Something you don’t know about me:

I am currently London Area President of the Association of Speakers Clubs – so if you need any public speaking tips, I’m here!

Sam Smales

Why do I do what I do:

I grew up in a deprived Yorkshire town where I’ve seen the positive impact even limited regeneration can have. I’ve always been fascinated with communications, and now I have the opportunity to use that passion and help make meaningful change for more communities across England and Wales.

What do I do at Grasshopper:

I work on a variety of projects from research, to public affairs and community engagement.

What is my favourite thing about Grasshopper?

The collaborative and open approach to work. Everyone wants to keep improving and innovating, which is great for working to the best of our collective ability.

Fun fact:

I took part in a 10-day trip to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco in 2012; hiking round the mountains and helping a local Berber community.

What do I do at Grasshopper:

I am part of our Corporate Affairs and Placemaking teams working on research, stakeholder engagement and supporting community-focused change in Wales.

Why I do what I do:

I have always believed in the power of communities. I want to help deliver positive improvements the world around us, especially in the context of the climate emergency.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

I love the vibrant team that I get to work with every day. Everyone is passionate about delivering change and Grasshopper’s environment and culture echoes this.

A random fact about me:

I cannot smell.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I’m part of the renewable energy team working on research, community and stakeholder engagement, helping to ensure that communities and stakeholders are able to contribute to how we make the country a better place.

Why I do what I do:

I’m passionate about improving communities and making them more sustainable places to live in for all. No two places are alike, and I want to play my part in helping them grow and prosper.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

Every day is an adventure! I could be on a site visit one day, off to a party conference the next, and  staging a consultation event to wind up the week. I get to go all over the country and meet so many interesting people.

A hobby of mine:

I’ve always enjoyed karaoke, in fact I’d argue I’ve got it down to a science! I appreciate the energy and the chance to sing your heart out with no judgement.

Why I do what I do:

I am an illustrator, 3D modeller and character designer. I often enjoy creating things that don’t exist in the real world and bringing them to reality. The only limit to illustration is your imagination.

What I do at Grasshopper?

I create images to bring to life written text so people can access and retain that information more easily.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

I love how Grasshopper allows me to draw cartoons for a living. Cartoons are not only for children!

A hobby of mine:

I collect miniature figurines. They don’t have a use, I just put them on a shelf and look at them.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I support the management team, doing the background stuff that helps Grasshopper run smoothly.

Why I do what I do:

Having worked in PR and stakeholder engagement for over 15 years, I wanted to continue with Grasshopper, albeit in a different role while I focus on my own writing.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

It’s full of people who care… about each other and the work they do.

And one last thing:

I was once a sex and drugs educator in schools.

What I do at Grasshopper:

I assist with background tasks across the team and in the running of the office and both external and internal events. Ensuring that the amazing team have everything they need to carry out their work.

Why I do what I do:

As a passionate environmentalist, I relish the chance to help keep the wheel of positive change turning.

What is your favourite thing about Grasshopper?

The team are passionate, dynamic and approachable, it really is a wonderful environment to work in.

Random fact about you:

I’m also an award-winning sound designer and a session musician who plays all over the country.

I recently converted a white van into a camper van and am planning to explore the UK with my partner and dog.
