Overview

RenewableUK Cymru is Wales largest not for profit renewable energy trade association. Their members are building Wales’ future energy system to deliver a future which is better for industry, bill payers, and the environment.

Grasshopper was engaged to support RenewableUK Cymru to plan and run a briefing event at the Senedd to engage with both Welsh Government Ministers and Members of the Senedd about the key actions required to ensure Wales sees a just and equitable green energy transition.

Included in this was the requirement to facilitate industry and expert guidance to politicians on three key renewable energy areas:

  • Grid connectivity
  • Ports & Supply chains
  • Planning & Consenting

What we did

Using our experience of briefing politicians both through written documents and verbally, Grasshopper guided and advised on the development of three briefing documents to inform, engage, and advise Members of the Senedd.

This included engaging FAQ sections and case studies to convey the key ways in which green and renewable energy could support Welsh communities and the economy.

Through drafting bilingual invitations and calling on an extensive list of political contacts across Wales, Grasshopper ensured cross-party engagement and attendance.

Utilising our experience of drafting Senedd statements and motions, Grasshopper collaborated with RenewableUK Cymru and the sponsoring MS to secure a ‘Statement of Opinion’ on the Senedd’s Record of Proceedings to further communicate RenewableUK Cymru’s role and key policy asks.

Grasshopper’s understanding of the Senedd estate and staff ensured we were able to plan and set up a visually engaging event to further encourage politicians and their staff to attend.

Outcome

  • Engaged and briefed 16 Members of the Senedd including recent First Minister Mark Drakeford.
  • Secured the support of three Welsh Government Cabinet Secretaries, in particular the new Energy & Economy Minister who formally addressed industry experts and leaders in setting out his vision and plans for Wales’ renewable energy future.
  • Through follow up communication with MSs post-event, Grasshopper secured a total of eight MSs supporting the ‘Statement of Opinion.’ This can be accessed here.
